Privacy

Simcoe Trading is made by Andrey Goussev in Ontario, Canada ("we" below). In short: most of what you do stays on your computer, your account holds only what it needs to keep your work in step between your computers, and we never sell or share your data, show ads or track you.
What stays on your computer
- Market data. Quotes, charts, news, company filings and economic data are fetched by the app straight from free public sources (such as Yahoo Finance, the SEC, FRED and the Bank of Canada), from your own computer. Those sources see your internet address and what you look up, under their own privacy policies. It doesn't pass through us, except as described under "The analysis" below.
- Broker keys and orders. If you connect a broker (Alpaca or Interactive Brokers), its keys are kept on your computer, in its keychain, and your orders go from your computer straight to your broker. We never see them.
- History and cache. The app's saved price history and its cache stay on your computer. So do your research notes when you're signed out; signed in, your account keeps them too (below).
What your account keeps
An account is optional. If you create one, it keeps:
- your email address and your password, stored scrambled (hashed) so nobody can read it, and the secret for two-step sign-in if you turn it on;
- your settings and saved work, so they follow you between computers: watchlists, portfolios and their transactions, alerts, research notes, monitors, workspaces, layouts and preferences.
Accounts are held by Supabase, our account provider, and the six-digit codes we email you are sent through Resend. Their servers may be outside Canada, for example in the United States.
The analysis
Some of the analysis (MODL's ratings, VAL's valuations, the scores in FA, FUND and TECH, and the backtest) is worked out on our server, hosted by Fly.io in Toronto. The app sends it the symbol you're looking at and the market data it fetched for it, with proof that you're signed in. It never sends your portfolios, watchlists or transactions. The server sends the result back and doesn't keep it. Like most servers, it keeps short-lived logs of requests (when, which account, from which internet address) to stop misuse, and it counts how many requests each account makes.
Updates
About ten seconds after it opens, the app asks GitHub, where the downloads are kept, whether there's a newer version, and downloads it from there. GitHub sees your internet address, under GitHub's privacy statement.
This website
The site uses no cookies, analytics or trackers. It's hosted by GitHub Pages, which records visitors' internet addresses for security. To show the latest version and what's new, your browser asks GitHub for the list of releases.
What we don't do
- We don't sell, rent or share your data with anyone, apart from the providers named above, who handle it for us.
- We don't show ads, and the app doesn't send usage statistics or crash reports.
Your choices
- Use the app without an account, and nothing about you leaves your computer except the requests to the public data sources and GitHub described above.
- To see, correct or delete what your account keeps, ask the person who invited you. We'll delete your account and everything it holds. (A delete button in the app is coming.)
- Removing the app doesn't remove your account; deleting your account doesn't remove the app or what's on your computer.
